What is a representation agreement?

The Representation Agreement Act allows you to appoint a person or persons as your legal representative to handle your personal and health care decisions, if you are unable to make your own decisions. A representation agreement creates a contract between you and the representative(s) you have appointed. There are two kinds, one is a “Section 7” limited agreement – which is to cover more simple, straightforward, everyday decisions. The other is a “Section 9” general agreement – which will encompass complex matters. This type of agreement is required for your representative to make such decisions as refusing life support if you become terminally ill (do not resuscitate provisions).
